The Diary of John William Nelson

Judge Not Harshly

Nelson Diary Page 30May 12, 1919: We are going aboard ship today. The U.S.S. Charleston is to take us home. The sea is like glass. We have good bunks and good eats.

May 22: Sighted the old Statue of Liberty docked at 2:30 and then to Camp Mills. and on to N.Y. Going to stay until we are broke. Plays, eats and. [sic]

May 31: Back to camp leaving for the west. Soon will be home.

June 2: Chicago. We hit Chicago. Met folks in Grant Park. Paraded down the old Boul Mich. Then to Camp Grant.

June 4: Discharged and home.

Nelson Diary Page 31That ends the story. Nothing so exciting to read but it reminds me of alot of exciting times. This book and I have been together for a long time thru thick and thin. We have both earned a rest and we are going to get it. We started out with one good resolution and we have kept it. We have done things we did not do before and we hope we won’t do again. So you who read in after years judge not harshly. Think what would you have done under the same circumstances. We are not sorry for what we have done in the days just passed but we would not want to do them again.

It was a great war.

Goodbye old Diary. We will meet again in years to come. There are many pleasant things recorded and many sad ones. You and I alone can really feel the meaning of this record.
